Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is not only a diverse group ethnically, but socially and academically as well. We are an inclusion classroom with students ranging in ability from English Language Learners to accelerated learners.
All of these children have different needs, and allowing them to experience a novel fully by having a book in their hands will be important to each student's learning.
Visual, tactile, and auditory learners can all benefit from the tasks that are able to be more readily completed by having these books at their fingertips.
My Project
A book in a child's hands is essential to help enrich the learning process. Often, we do not have a class set of the novels we choose to use in our lessons, therefore the students may have the tendency to be more passive in their learning while listening to it being read aloud. Having a book in their hands helps to ensure that they are actively participating during our lessons. Having a book in their hands also allows students to learn, and reinforces the skills needed to reference text evidence while discussing the content of the readings as well as while writing about the text.
Fish in a Tree and Because of Mr. Terupt are novels that accentuate the acceptance of self, as well as the acceptance of others.
Both books emphasize realistic struggles that children may go through academically and how that impacts their world socially as well. Bringing these issues to the forefront of our lessons and incorporating the awareness into our daily discussions allows our student population, which is quite diverse cognitively, to be more empathetic toward their peers. This is not just a lesson for the classroom, but a lesson for a lifetime.
