Resilient, Courageous, Compassionate, and Respectful ... Words to describe the students at KES.
KES is the only Title I school in Mililani, which means a little more than half of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
Another challenge is about 40% of incoming Kindergarten students have no preschool experience. With all these challenges, we are faced with one more, Distance Learning. Families in our community are struggling financially more than ever due to COVID-19, deciding between work or being present to support their child's first grade education. Although we are faced with these challenges, our students continue to show resilience, courage, compassion, and respect through online learning.
Cougars will persevere!
My Project
As teachers, we need to provide the best quality online education/instruction for our students. We began the first week of school with “getting families connected” on Webex, and showing the different online platforms for this school year. There were many mishaps, glitches, and poor connectivity with technology. However, the students persevered. Hopefully, with an Apple Pen, I can jot down notes and provide positive written feedback in quick time. This will help them grow and learn as first graders.
In addition, the books for home will be a great resource for families to disconnect from their computer/device, and spend time flipping the pages of a book, and having story time "talks" as a family!
I can't wait to give the gift of learning through a book, and the gift of seeing personal written notes through an Apple Pen.
