"Don't give back, give first!" I was challenged with this quotation at the beginning of the school year by a fellow teacher in my school district. I find myself attempting to give more to my students this year as our economic conditions have changed with the school boundaries redrawn.
My 17 eager learners are enthusiastic and ready to learn each day.
They come from very diverse homes, some apartment dwellers and others in modest single family homes. The trouble is that right now in our classroom, we have a rug in our gathering space that is falling apart. Each day, more and more pieces are placed in the trash can. This classroom tool is now serving as more of a distraction to the kids versus an instructional aid.
My Project
I am requesting a pond themed classroom rug. This rug would be placed in our gathering space which is used multiple times throughout the day. It will definitely match our classroom frog theme and will serve the purpose of a place for the kids to sit together in a much better way than what we currently have in place. The kids will be able to focus more on learning instead of which part of the rug has broken off today. In our gathering space not only are instructional mini-lessons taught, but also our morning meeting, community circle, is held there as well. This space inspires the kids to recognize others with compliments and to be aware of what is going on in their world around them.
Having a classroom instructional rug will not only benefit my 17 learners today, but also many students in the future as well.
Having the proper materials needed in the classroom makes a powerful difference in the life of a teacher AND more importantly, a child. When students know that they have a space in which they feel safe, cared about, and unique, they will strive to do their best each and every day!
