Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our new school year 2018-19 begins! Our students are ecstatic about creating and contributing to our school garden. They would love to include science, math, writing, and art lessons to build it up.
All our students get excited anytime they apply hands-on to any activity.
Imagine their capabilities in applying these subjects areas to an outdoor learning environment! I would be both happy and extremely proud of their successes as they also learn by using teamwork and cooperative learning. I’m sure they will appreciate the outcome and they will move forward with incredible memories that they will use, build on, share, and be proud of.
My Project
Students typically learn well in a classroom setting through instruction, literature, interaction, practice, and technology, but can you imagine what the possibilities would be and could lead to, with hands-on experiences.
To begin with, I would like to incorporate literature about plants, nature, and insects to set a purpose to motivate students to begin a school garden.
In a garden students can use a garden hose to work with the soil by planting seeds and weeding. They can investigate the life cycle of plants and learn about how certain elements are needed for plant growth. They will be able to learn how to make decisions, such as over watering, under watering, and working with different types of soil for different kinds of vegetable or shrubs. Students will also be able to use a water hose to explore how sunlight passes through water droplets and how it separates the light to create a rainbow. And, of course, practicing science safety will allow students to use safety goggles to apply to our safety rules.
The activities are endless! They can investigate many topics such as nutrition, weather, insects, solar and wind power all while creating an outdoor learning environment, and a beautiful school garden. This wonderful donation will most definitely allow students the chance to get to know their beautiful Mother Earth and it’s natural wonders!
