Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a new teacher, but I am able to confidently say that my students are a hardworking and a dedicated bunch. The elementary school had a tough time getting a music teacher to stay and the kids were left with hardly any real guidance in the world of music. They would mostly watch music related movies and videos, but eventually that became mundane. They desired to be challenged and to flourish. Music provided a great outlet, especially for my students who struggled to keep up in their subject classes, to excel in. Even though they didn't have much in their music classroom, they are innovative and extraordinarily talented. They are more than classmates to each other and more than students to me. They are family.
My Project
Through this project, my students will be challenged in a new and unique way that I believe will widen their view of music. My students learn music in my classroom primarily through games, interactive technology, and performance opportunities.
I would like to focus on how I can provide them with more opportunities to harness their potential as well as their imagination through this project.
My students have learned how to internalize and express their music with their own voices, Orff instruments, and recorders. In order to broaden their ability and to make them more well-rounded musicians, I have created the Ukulele Experiment to establish a foundation and to train them in string instruments. Furthermore, I hope that all facets of practicing and performing in my class elevate their cultural awareness through the songs they sing and the type of music they perform.
This project will not only help my students in their development, but will also kindle their desire for growing and improving their musical abilities. I hope that learning music through any means continues to bring them joy as they become more in touch with their humanity.
