This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Although I teach computer science to all students, pre-k through 8th grade, this project is for our middle school students. We are a public Montessori school which is part of a large urban district in Ohio. We follow a child-centered approach with a goal to develop each child physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively allowing students to learn in collaborative groups.
We are ready to launch our makerspace, and explore other forms of instructional technology that can become a trade or entrepreneurial skill.
I would very much like to bring home ec back to the middle school and allow students to learn new skills as they learn to create.
My Project
Middle school students are just learning to navigate the world around them. They need outlets of expression that allow them to appropriately show their personalities. Learning to digitally create with the Silhouette and vinyl will expose them to a new art medium. Once they see how much they can create digitally, it opens up whole new pathways. They might choose a digital design high school, decide to study it in college, or simply to use their new maker skills to relax and express themselves.
Using heat transfer vinyl to adhere their future hopes and dreams to their pillowcase keeps their goals a visible part of their daily routine.
The students feel that having their goals on their pillow will help them stay focused and make their goals more likely to be obtained. The Future of My Dreams project is just the first step in helping them to find their passions and keep them on course.
