My Students

The students involved in this project are a diverse group of learners looking to establish a classroom environment that promotes creativity and problem solving. We are a group that emphasizes a learning by doing approach that breaks free of the traditional assessment-based evaluation of student performance.

Our students are researching the future of food production through experiments with vertical hydroponics and aquaculture.

They are automating and analyzing gardens using CAD, electronics, engineering and coding. These are really impressive young scientists.

My Project

Students are trying to better understand the footprint of their food and the future of its production through the study of vertical hydroponics and aquaculture. We have spent a number of years studying various plants species in alternative growing systems while accounting for their energy and natural resource usage. It has become the goal of our group to create closed systems in which the nitrogenous wastes from dietary protein sources such as freshwater fish can act as a nutrient supply for our crops.

The efficiency with which different species of freshwater fish convert their food into biomass is of particular interest in this study.

We need these requested eight fish aquariums and pumps to set up our research projects. We will analyze a number of species of fish for our aquaponic growing system while raising them in the aquaculture aquaria featured in this campaign. We will be sharing what we learn and comparing our data with a number of schools around the country.
