My students need batteries, 20 clipboards, a 3 hole punch, and double stick tape to keep us organized, learning, prepared and to keep our equipment working properly.
"Don't count the days, make the days count!"--I've been thinking a lot about this quote as I prepare to start another school year. I'm counting down the days and hope my students are as excited to begin as I am. We are asking for basic supplies to keep us learning and happy and make each day count.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
said it best, "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and think critically. Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education." I am a first grade teacher in a rural area in Idaho. My students' economic situations are just as varied as are their family dynamics. We celebrate the diversity in our school and we love being known as the "Stars." Seventy percent of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Regardless of these factors, every single one of my students has a great desire to create, learn, explore, play, and to think critically.
My Project
Each child in my class will have access to a student response clicker. They will use this daily as I formatively assess how they are grasping different concepts. The children enjoy them and they make learning fun while making the students accountable for their own learning. We are asking for batteries to keep the system running. The clip boards will be used when the children are not at their desks and need a board to write on. This will make things much nicer for the children. We use double stick tape for a variety of projects including photos, art projects, and displaying writing samples for others to see and read. We could sure use a three hole punch for the children's portfolios and scrapbooks. I just know these basic supplies will really come in handy this year, keep us more organized, and help the children in many ways.
I firmly believe that if children are not listening, then they are not learning.
I also have found that if children do not have basic supplies, then they cannot be organized, and that also affects their learning. We really appreciate donors that help us get the things we need like batteries, tape, and clip boards. We are anxious to have these things to begin our new school year, and we look forward to telling you the many ways we use them in our first grade classroom.
