I teach at a low-income/high poverty elementary school in Southern Oregon. My students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. We are an AVID School District that is dedicated to helping all students do their best and become their best selves. We emphasize college and career readiness, with organization being one of the main components.
I want to instill in my students organizational strategies that will help them be successful throughout their lifetime.
I want to lead by example by setting up efficient organizational structure and systems within my classroom. Although this has been a strength of mine over the years, I am transitioning to an Elementary Math Specialist position. This will change the physical requirements of my classroom and how I am working with groups of students.
My Project
As a Math Specialist, Third, Fourth and Fifth Graders will rotate through my classroom for math instruction. Each grade level will join me for whole group instruction and differentiated small group workplaces. We believe in a hands-on approach to teaching math. We start by building a foundation of conceptual understanding and then moving toward procedural mastery. Along with this approach to teaching math comes lots and LOTS of manipulatives.
With approximately 72 students across three grade levels it is imperative to have organizational systems in place to maximize our learning time.
These materials will support smooth transitions, effective use of materials and fun hands-on discovery of math fundamentals.
