I am a baseball coach at Paul Robeson High School, located on Chicago's south side. We are in the heart of the Englewood community, one of the city's poorest and toughest areas. Many of my students are from single-parent homes and non-traditional family environments. Approximately 95% of the students that attend our school receive free lunch or reduced-price lunch. After-school programs at Paul Robeson High School assist our students in becoming well-rounded individuals. The goal of our baseball program is to supplement the students' educational experience by encouraging them to improve other areas of their lives. Primarily, our baseball program focuses on developing discipline, self-esteem, and teamwork. Our off-season workouts have started with record numbers in participation, but because of budgetary constraints, our teams do not have the resources to prepare adequately for our season. Additionally, many of our players lack the fundamental skills to play baseball at the high school level, as this the first time many of them are picking up a glove. Baseball is sometimes a forgotten sport in inner-city areas such as Englewood, as basketball and football receive the most services and resources. With two levels of teams and increased participation in a program with low funding, we have a limited number of resources. Primarily, the smaller items needed to assist the players in learning and honing the fundamentals of the game are needed, including a curve-ball 3-pack, batting tees, a pop-up pitcher target, and an organizer bag. Assistance in helping our players reach their goals is greatly appreciated. We are excited about positively impacting the lives of Englewood's youth through baseball, and we hope you can join us in our mission.
