I teach functional skills to students with severe disabilities at a large high school. Beyond simply teaching basic reading and arithmetic, I am also trying to teach these students the importance of teamwork and friendship.
To do this, I started a "Frienship Club" with 30 regular and special education students. The club has been a tremendous success, generating natural friendships and unique opportunities for my students within the high school community.
The Friendship Garden is a fantastic way for these club members to learn about science, team work, how to take care of their environment and how to appreciate nature's beauty.
The Friendship Garden, which will include ten 8' raised beds for growing organic vegetables and flowers, offers a variety of benefits to all 1400 high school students. Not only will they have a beautiful place to learn about diversity and make new friends, but also the 30 Friendship Club members and advisors, who are responsible for the garden's up-keep will learn about science, friendship and responsibility.
I cannot emphasize enough the importance of healthy environments for all children and the opportunity for children with severe disabilities to make friends. I have seen magical things happen with my students when they can do something with the earth while hanging out with a buddy.
