Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom culture is a busy place, characterized by a shared belief in the importance of learning. I convey high expectations for learning for all students and insist that my students assume responsibility for high quality by initiating improvements and/or assisting peers throughout the lessons. My students are ELL learners in grades K,1,2 and 3. The population that this project will be presented to will be in an urban low-income setting. Within this population, there are ESL students that vary in their language proficiency and the language that they speak. The languages that are present are Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, French and Haitian. The levels of proficiency present are mostly beginners and intermediate.
I believe all my students are able to learn English without fear and are extremely motivated.
My students work collaboratively, cooperatively and help each other which allows them to become independent learners. They do not feel like they are in competition or alone. They have a positive and active learning environment which excites them and enhances their successes.
My Project
The number of students in schools across the country who are culturally and linguistically diverse is growing every year. These students, often referred to as English language learners or ELLs, are learning English while they also learn grade-level academic material. Because they have different levels of ability to communicate in English, they need support in the English language to help them be successful in school and beyond. It is expected that this population of students will continue to grow. The growing population of English language learners impacts school communities in many ways.
This project's focus will be on how my school community can work together with families to support our ELL student's learning.
This is important because students benefit when families and schools work together. Family engagement practices, that I would like to provide with this project, will take into consideration students’ academic achievement and language development. I would like to encourage families to use these resources as a tool to support their child's English learning progress. The family packs, that I am requesting will provide engaging games both children and families will love! Each pack includes everything families need to play a language game to practice rhyming, vocabulary and more English skills learned throughout the year. Families of English language learners, who are often still learning the language themselves, must be made to feel a part of the school community. I would take the opportunity to invite families into the classroom and work with their children and make a difference in their English language learning.
