This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a Title l and high poverty school where every student receives free breakfast and lunch. Many go from school to daycare and get home in time to go to bed. Then, get up the next morning and do it all over again. Their caregivers have to work long hours and are not able to spend a lot of quality time with their children.
At home, many of my students receive just bare necessities and sometimes not even that; they are not exposed to the many wonders of nature and the beauty that is all naturally all around our city and state.
These bright, energetic third graders have so many questions about the world around them that they are not able to visit and explore. I want to bring the world of animals and nature to them in our classroom. Just to see the smiles and the looks of amazement as they see and learn new things makes my heart sing and lets me know that I am right where I should be each day!
My Project
My students are very inquisitive and they all love "bugs". They are amazed at the wonder of the butterfly and its life cycle. The live larvae would give them the opportunity to watch step-by-step as the cocoon is made to the end when the beautiful butterfly makes its entrance into the world. The models of butterflies and the reference books will make it possible for the students to easily research butterflies and their life cycle before actually watching the cycle transpire live each day in the classroom.
The students would write each day in their butterfly diaries about what they observe and any changes they see from day-to-day; then, at the end they will write beautiful stories with illustrations and photographs to share with their families about the life cycle they have witnessed.
I can hardly wait to see the facts, their feelings and observations, drawings and photographs my students will put in their butterfly diaries each day. This experience will be one that all of my students will treasure and make them even more respectful of the all of the wonders of the insect kingdom.
