I teach fourth grade in a small, rural, central Pennsylvania town. We have a very tight budget, but I work to incorporate as many activities as possible into our curriculum. I want to make the experience of learning memorable and am constantly devising new stations, labs and other fun activities to help key ideas stick in my students' minds.
Hands-on activities allow my students to fully experience the topic we are discussing.
Rather than simply reading about a science idea, the children love it! This multi-sensory approach anchors the concepts in the minds of my students and has helped them to become some of the top performers in standardized testing in our district.
My Project
Since consolidating into our new school, there have been many changes for the students. Due to the cold weather and mud, our metal detecting club has been put on hold.
One of the main advantages of our club is that it allowed those children who might not have others to play with to have a common interest with other students.
The social groups were being dissolved and the kids were working together to detect. Switching to a new school means our club is needed more than ever! But what can be done if detecting isn't a current option? In talking with students, I discovered that there is a large group who would be interested in working on models at school. There would many advantages to a model club. The kids would need to be responsible with their work, pay attention to detail, work as a team with their partner, and more! And the best part is it isn't impacted by the weather! Thank you for considering our project!
