First grade students enjoy being creative as the learn. Connecting reading experiences to the fine arts strengthens the learning experience. It makes learning more fun and memorable. My students' needs fit this description perfectly.
They are in need of materials that offer learning opportunities that connect reading to the artistic discipline of the fine arts.
Our classroom is comprised of 24 students. Our school is located in a wonderful, rural town and serves grades K-5 with approximately 50 students in each grade. I am striving to provide my students with opportunities to improve reading comprehension skills, phonics and grammar skills, and writing skills through the use of art medium.
My Project
My students will use mentor texts and drawing materials to make real life connections between books and art. They will participate daily in large and small group discussions and academic activities to gain an understanding of the text followed by artistic opportunities to support and strengthen learning. Each mentor text will be used for a duration of one week. The drawing materials will be used daily leading to completed projects based on the text at the end of each week.

Often, classroom lessons are focused on text score results and outcomes. This project will allow my students reach such outcomes while gaining an understanding that learning is creative and and fun. Their reading skills will improve because their intrinsic motivation level will be high.
