Help me give my students access to a calm, relaxing room where they can feel safe to process through emotions and issues that are inhibiting their academic success.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a social worker at our alternative school program located on the south side of Kansas City. My students are creative, resourceful, brave, and most of all resilient in the face of life's tough challenges. The things my students are able to overcome and come into school smiling every day amazes me. My students enjoy hands-on and real world examples pertaining to the subjects we cover. I am actively searching for more hands on opportunities for my students in order to create lasting learning!
My Project
A lack of social-emotional and coping skills is the primary reason that students in our district are sent to us at the alternative school site. With being relocated this school year to a different building and having our program enrollment increase 4-fold, our program is strapped for resources to build social-emotional resiliency in our kids. I would love to build a calming and healing room for our students to be able to process through feelings with the counselor, social worker, or family school liaison on site.
To foster success for our students to be able to return to their home school, we must first build the social-emotional capacity in our students that allows them to self-regulate and think using their rational pre-frontal cortex rather than their animalistic brain stem.
The room will have a cool and calming color scheme, relaxing essential oil diffusion, and a variety of manipulatives for students to process through their feelings. To foster success for our students to be able to return to their home school, we must first build the social-emotional capacity in our students that allows them to self-regulate and think using their rational pre-frontal cortex rather than their animalistic brain stem. When we give our students these valuable skills, we satisfy their basic needs and allow them to move up on the hierarchy to achieve greater things in school and eventually in life.
