The Fear Of The Unknown: Multicultural Literature

My students need 5 copies of 7 various books with titles from "Peace Like a River" to "The Kite Runner" that might expand their individual world views beyond the region in which they live.

Help me teach my students about other cultures, countries, and world views necessary to succeed in college, but also to combat the growing mistrust that many Americans have of these cultures, countries, and world views. I teach regular sophomore and Pre-AP English in a highly impoverished part of America: the Delta region of Arkansas.

The obstacle I face is simple: My school district lacks the money to buy the books for my classroom. Teachers in our district receive a debit card with two hundred dollars to buy supplies.

The best way to really instill a sense of the variety of cultures in the world, and even our own American society, is to provide a variety of books for literature circles for the students. With about five students in each circle, the students will get to choose which book their circle will read. The students will ask larger questions about the various cultures but still make connections about such rich thematic content as the futility of war, moral obligations to those who lack, and the journey to personal growth that extends to every culture. These groups will rotate every four weeks and read a different novel.

Endorsing this project will allow my students to reach into other cultures, societies, and people groups and reject fear, ignorance, and hatred. Your support will enable them to succeed in a shrinking and competitive world. It will help them understand the variety of cultures they could encounter at the collegiate level. More importantly, your support could help to embolden them to conquer ignorance of the unknown and to accept societal and cultural differences with less fear and angst than previous generations.
