Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When you were 14, were you enthralled by the novels of Charles Dickens and Nathaniel Hawthorne? Could you just not get enough of Shakespeare? ...NO WAY! Help save my students with contemporary, relatable literature!
My students are between the ages of 14 and 17 and attend a low income public high school in California.
The classes I teach are incredibly diverse; I teach students who speak Spanish, Portuguese, Tagalog, Mandarin, and Arabic (just to name a few) in addition to English. All of my students bring unique backgrounds, talents, and experiences to the classroom, and they like nothing more than to be challenged and inspired by texts they find current, authentic, and relatable.
My Project
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green was published in January 2012 and has been on the best-seller's list ever since. The novel is told from a female teenager's point of view and explores real world issues that many of my students are currently facing. The novel is packed with humor, romance, suspence, adventure, and thought-provoking philosophy. In addtion to studying various literary elements (narrative structure, figurative language, character motivation, etc.), I hope The Fault in Our Stars helps my students find the joys in reading again.
Too often, I've found that in the public education system, English teachers forget what it was like to be in high school. We often feel the need to teach "lit-er-a-tuuuure" that our students find archaic and boring. Overall, I see enthusiasm for reading decrease as students get older. I am confident that The Fault in Our Stars will break this trend and engage students in the reading process once again!
Please help my students become excited about reading!
It is time to read a current and relevant novel that will inspire high schoolers to read "for the fun of it" again! The Fault in Our Stars is just the novel for our future stars!
