"I pledge allegiance to myself and who I want to be..." Each day, we begin our class with a promise that helps my students focus on what they want to do and to learn today to make their future dreams a reality. It's a reminder that we start each day with a positive attitude. We know that there will be challenges, but we also know that we can handle them. We can't control our circumstances, but we do control how we respond to them.
"I can't wait to make a mistake!" From day one, we foster a safe community of learners in our room.
If a student doesn't feel comfortable, they won't try anything new. We are all learners, and support each other in taking risks and making mistakes, because we know that is where the real learning happens. Ours is a Title I school, serving a largely immigrant, Latino population, in a densely-populated urban city. Statistically destined to drop out before they complete high school, my students aspire to go beyond the stereotypes, and be the first college graduates in their family. There are no shortcuts!
Education keeps evolving and changing. And yet, I'm at a point in my career where I can safely say that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
Parents are their child's very first teachers.
School comes after that. But, that precious bond developed by exploring the world around us with loved one never goes away.
My hope is that this PowerMyLearning program will enhance classroom learning as well as provide an opportunity to engage as a family at home over exciting material. I believe this will take their learning to a whole new level. When we know we're going to have to teach something to someone else, we really need to learn that thing well. I can't wait to see where this takes them next!
