This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Overcoming obstacles together is what we do. The majority of my scholars in this particular class and I are working on our fourth year together, and honestly they've taught me more than I've taught them. Watching them grow into leaders and young adults ready to change the world has been one of the greatest gifts one could ever ask for.
My kids are extraordinary, pushing past the barriers others have set before them with grace, dignity, and love in their hearts.
We are a dropout prevention school, so saying it has been easy all the time wouldn't be the truth, however, we have done it together.
My Project
A class set of J.D. Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye" would be an essential element in aiding my senior boys in examining societal constructs, which they have been fighting against, most of the time I've known them. I believe they will each be able to find bits and pieces of Holden in themselves and find him to be a character they can relate to. When my students and I sat down to look at novels, yes, I let them them choose what they wanted to read, this was one of the favorites. Not to mention it is an absolute literary classic.
