Our pre-k students are from the most diverse borough of New York City, Queens. Because of this, our population is made up of many English Language Learners. When they come into pre-k, for most, it's their first time in school.
It is up to us to make sure they get the best quality public education they deserve.
Our kids are young, ambitious, and curious, but there's darkness lurking about that's much too serious.
Pre-k is a time to explore and play, to imagine, and create until the end of the day, but the trouble that's looming seems to be blooming. Academic rigor! Academic rigor! They're telling us to grow up much, much quicker. All kinds of backgrounds, cultures, languages, and needs are represented here. As diverse as we are, there's one thing that's clear, we all know how to play so please help make sure play will stay!
My Project
Ever wonder how a child views life and the adventures they go on when they put their backpacks on in the morning and set off for school? Pre-K is an adventure that needs to be documented for parents to see. Pictures alone aren't enough to capture these moments.
Parents and guardians drop their children off at school everyday unaware of the journeys their pre-kindergarten children will embark on.
The pictures we take and show our parents is a great way to engage and inform them of what their kids do, but what if we can show them? I want to bring in two documentation cameras to record the evolution of their ideas while engaged in play. Parents can see how their children interact with others, what they are curious about, and what they do in school. There's so much going on in our classroom. I would like to have two more cameras set up to record a time lapse of our students' ideas come to life through play.
At the end of the day, they'll ask them what they did in school during dinner time discussions. The child can tell them and the parents can take their word for it and imagine the adventures of their child. With your support, they can now see what their children did and experience life in their child's perspective.
