I teach at a Title I School located in an urban area of a major northeastern city. 86% of the student population is economically disadvantaged and receive free and reduced lunch. Because of the financial crisis our state faces in education, it is a huge challenge to acquire the necessary educational, classroom materials my students need to succeed and learn as well as the materials I need to create fun and engaging activities in the classroom and as take homes. My students do not have the resources at home to help them or donate to the class. 47% of the students are English Language Learners, which makes it a challenge for them to learn basic math and ELA skills. Most of these children come from homes where English is rarely or never spoken. This creates a challenge for me as I teach elementary foundational skills and need as many parents in the know as possible.
My Project
These materials will make a difference in my students' learning because I will be able to continue creating sight word cards on the paper for them to take home each week to practice their words with their parents. I currently do not have any more cardstock paper, and my students' parents nor my school can afford to provide any for my class. The pencil sharpener will allow my students to have sharpened pencils to use in all their classwork through out the day. We currently have 1 out of the 6 holes that sometimes works/sharpens our pencils. These materials will benefit my students greatly.
