We are a small rural school district. We work hard to provide opportunities for our students that meet all of their needs, both academically and social-emotionally.
All of my students have disabilities or need increased levels of academic support and they are absolutely incredible.
Over the past two years these students have given up their lunch to come talk about a book that we are all reading. These are students who struggle and love the social time of lunch and yet they assumed that Book Club could continue, even if I didn't have them in class everyday. I love that they keep coming, giving up their personal time to grow and succeed, supporting each other along the way.
My Project
I have a small group of students who participate in Book Club. They all give up their lunchtime to talk about what we have read and we set a group goal to read throughout the next week.
They are wonderful kids and while they may not love to read, they do work hard to be successful.
I would love to tie in a trip to WonderWorks while reading the book Running Out of Time. The book focuses on the use of Science. I would really like to take them to a science museum. This trip would not only provide material to connect science to our book but also through the ropes course and laser tag opportunities we would be building communication skills. All of my students have disabilities and/or struggle as a result of some obstacle they have faced personally. I would love to provide them an opportunity outside of school. This also ties naturally into their study of Earth Science, specifically environmental science. This would be a great way to study Natural Disasters and the role of Science within these disasters.
