My students need printer ink, paper, and a binding machine to be enouraged in writing and art. Senior "Sarah" has begun a literary/arts journal called "The Echo" which will highlight students' creative projects.
Literature and art are two creative ways to express a culture. Northwood High School has imaginative students who seek an outlet to display their great writings, photos, sculptures, and drawings. A literary/arts journal is just the venue for this display.
Northwood School is set in the peaceful woods of northern Wisconsin.
This is a small high school with just over 100 students, and these creative artists and writers would like to share their inspired pieces with the community. A senior has begun to collect poems, photos, stories, and other innovations to include in a literary/arts journal called "The Echo". This is a student-driven idea and she and her underclass assistant editors hope to continue this for years to come. "The Echo" would be shared with appreciative students, staff, and parents.
Small schools sometimes have limited opportunities for such creative magazines, but with the willingness of the students, Northwood can enjoy its own brand of a literary/arts journal. This project would help foster interest and skill in writing and art, helping students reach their potential in ways not before possible.
My Project
After inquiring, it is clear that contracting professional binding would be too expensive. The students are submitting creative, original work. Our task is to choose a format that will showcase these imaginative pieces in a way that is also within a budget. For these reasons, we are requesting a wire binding machine and binding spines, so that the students can construct "The Echo" at school. In addition, we would like some reams of special paper and ink supplies to best show colored art and photographs, which we can print at school. The materials from Donors Choose will allow "The Echo" to be produced with good quality and bound in an organized manner. These supplies will ensure that the student work is displayed with respect and handled in a professional way. The binding machine will be used yearly henceforth, so the Donors Choose gift will impact hundreds or thousands of future students. Art appreciation will be promoted, and literary skills will be fostered.
Rural Wisconsin offers few opportunities for art shows and author experiences.
Rural schools have few opportunities to display student talents in these areas. The simple addition of "The Echo", a literary/arts journal, will promote student interest, knowledge, and appreciation in our corner of the world. Perhaps this project will continue long after we do, after all, "Ars longa, vita brevis." Even though life is short, art is long, and creative masterpieces will outlast the creator.
