Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want my kids to have the opportunity to be creative using real art materials. I teach a fifth grade class of 33 kids in a very low-income neighborhood on Chicago's far west side. Our principal does some amazing things with our school, but we are still very short on supplies. Our current art supplies consist of a basket containing some crayons, a few markers, and a couple colored pencils. Its barely enough for the entire room to be able to color at the same time. The class has art once per week, but I like to incorporate art into other subjects, such as social studies and science. This is virtually impossible with our present supplies.
I have an art background and I find that students can learn complex subjects, like the organelles within a cell, by drawing a model of it. Drawing a picture of a historical period helps social studies come to life. Art is a very useful tool to help students become interested and learn the subjects that are crucial to their development.
As a way to acknowledge the students' achievement, we end each project by hanging up their drawings and presentations on our Drawing Board. It is a great way to help them feel good about themselves, their education, and learning in general. Please accept this request for different kinds and sizes of drawing paper so that we can use drawing in various aspects of our classroom learning.
