Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our elementary is a country school that was established in 1857, just south of its present location, and is the oldest elementary school in California. It's always had a small student population, around 260, which allows the teachers to know every student. We pride ourselves on having a strong learning community. We are a multiage school, where students loop from one grade level to the next for two years total. Teachers get to know students and their families quite well, which encourages communication and involvement. We are a Title I school, with a population composed of 60% English Language Learners (72% Latinos and 18% white), and 67% of our families qualify for free or reduced lunch.
My Project
Writing Workshop is a method of writing instruction where students write frequently, therefore developing as authors. In our school district, teachers use writing curriculum designed by Lucy Calkins. The units of study help teachers provide students with opportunities to develop their writing skills, specific to different writing genres, so they develop into competent writers.
Students have become enthusiastic about writing!
They're excited to share their story or opinion. Part of instilling this enthusiasm is sharing writing tools which enhance their writing experience. When students have a writing portfolio to showcase their work, or colored pens to edit, or sticky notes to share opinions or celebrations about another's writing project, they become invested in the writing process. They begin to believe that their stories and opinions are important.
