Mr. Musumeci from Oakland CA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

The Depression, 1930's, and All That Jazz!

My students need 23 biography books to understand the different stories of the 1930s as we jump into our first trade book, "Bud, Not Buddy", together. Help me bring the decade alive!

My Students

Have you ever been swept away into a book only to find yourself aching to dive into the sounds and nuances of the setting? Help me bring the 1930's alive for my students. From Swing at the Savoy, to riding the rails, from Amelia Earhart to the New Deal, let's make this a unit they will never forget!

I teach some of the most inquisitive children at a public school in a poverty-stricken area of Northern California.

My students love being engaged in a lesson. They are hands-on and all-in whenever the moment presents itself. Help me keep them engaged by allowing them the opportunity to read and learn about the 1930s through stories, and resources that will transport them in time and open the doors of history and herstory for them!

My Project

From illustrating how Louis Armstrong and Lady Holiday swung a decade into a whole new era, to the Negro Leagues and the major leagues swinging that bat, from great women flying across the world and leading us into a new sense of our world, to a New Deal that sought a fair shake for those less fortunate than that, we need these books to help my students get a sense of all the wonder and struggle that the 1930's imposed on its people. What's more, it will bring the novel we will read as a class to life; offering an opportunity for each child to delve deeper into the time period and learn more about some aspect of that time period that they will be responsible to report on.

I plan to transform my students' relationship with reading and history, but I can't do it without your help.

Bring my students Satchmo and Satchel Paige, help them understand the Dust Bowl and the New Deal, give them the experience of riding the rails and Amelia flying high! Help turn a good book into an amazing unit! Make this one unforgettable for our kids.
