Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Anatomy & Physiology is a Career & Technology Education (C.A.T.E.) / Science elective offered to 11th &12th graders. Our school is a Title I school, low socio-economic status, high minority students, with many on free and reduced lunch. Anatomy & Physiology is an elective offered where students can obtain science credits. The increasing popularity of anatomy & physiology in popular Hollywood TV drama and as a career has sparked a great interest & curiosity in our students. Due to exponential growth, funding for materials has been minimal to keep up with demand. The students who take anatomy & physiology are high performing honor students who are enrolled in more than 1 science course and are college bound. The class utilizes all science disciplines & is cross curricular utilizing math, history, English language arts, and government. Anatomy & physiology also qualifies as a STEM course, emphasizing Science Technology Education & Math
My Project
Enticing my students to put down their devices and read can be a challenge. I have been successful at persuading students to take up a good book to read about content relevant to my class, Anatomy & Physiology. There is a key factor. That book must be captivating, entertaining, and stimulating.
I want my students to READ!!!
When I read Mary Roach's book "STIFF: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" I was instantly hooked. I could not put it down and I have shared this great read with past students.
Anatomy & Physiology is not just the study and dissection of interacting cells, tissues, and organs, it should be more than that. I want my students to know how specimens, human cadavers, are used everyday in science. I want them to read about the variety of unconventional careers associated with the course they are taking.
