Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a wonderful group of students. I have a very diverse classroom environment that makes all of my students feel safe and welcomed. I have a wide range of students who come from all different backgrounds and each has a story that is unique and plays a factor in their learning. I run my classroom as if we are a family, a team, as leaders for each other. We support each others learning and we celebrate all our success.
I teach at a Title 1 School in the heart of a downtown Phoenix.
My student's don't have a lot and I try to give each of them all that I can. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. For the a lot of students, this is their only chance of the day to have a meal, and feel safe. Despite any hardship that my students face in their home lives, the students in my class are eager to learn and love school. Every child that enters my room is loved and knows that they are each and every day.
I am also a part of the DC Club for the middle school at my school.
My Project
In a short few months, some wonderful 8th graders will be getting on a plane to visit Washington D.C. For most students this will be their first trip out of the state, for some even the neighborhood. Our goal is to inspire and show these wonderful people that there is a big world out there full of lots of opportunities.
Our students have fund-raised thousands of dollars, received over 4,000 dollars in donations, and have raised 330 dollars a piece themselves to get their tails on a plane to D.C.
We have been asking our families to support their son or daughter financially, which in a low socioeconomic environment can really leave them in difficult situations.
We want to supply them with adequate luggage so after this trip they'll be inspired to fill that bag and get out of the neighborhood for the rest of their lives.
