I work at a special education school, servicing emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students. Our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds in NYC; over 95% of the student body is eligible for free lunch and over 90% receive public assistance.
I teach a modified curriculum in all the major subject areas, including Math, English, Science, and Social Studies.
Despite their special learning needs, my students are focused on their studies all year long, and work diligently to complete requirements for their high school diploma. I have some students who are planning to attend college, and others that will be participating in vocational programs when they graduate.
My Project
I would like to take my students to see a Broadway production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which has been hailed as “the most inventive new show on Broadway." The show is based on the internationally best-selling novel of the same name to “extraordinary” life.
Fifteen-year-old Christopher has an extraordinary brain; he is exceptionally intelligent but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. When he falls under suspicion for killing his neighbor’s dog, he sets out to identify the true culprit, which leads to an earth-shattering discovery and a journey that will change his life forever.
We have been studying this book in class, and my students have truly identified with the protagonist who has Asperger's Syndrome. I would love to bring them to this Broadway performance.
For a typical school trip, parents would be asked to provide funds for their children.
However, most of my students live in poverty, and their families are unable to reach into their own pockets. We strive to provide our students with as many experiences as possible, regardless of their financial situations. Thank you for considering my special students. This would be an amazing Broadway experience!
