My students possess everything you think of when you think of a kindergartener. They are inquisitive, energetic, adventurous, creative, intelligent, hard-working, friendly, spontaneous, tough, and courageous. My students have been put to the challenge to start their first year at our school in a completely different way, and they took it on in the most positive way. Their personalities shine through every day, sharing every morning a little bit of who they are with the class. Every day, they show up with a great big smile, hands ready to work, and a brain ready to learn.
My Project
The picture books were carefully selected to ensure my classroom library was inclusive for all students, including the cultural backgrounds of the students in my class. Picture books are one of the easiest and most effective ways teachers can create a sense of awareness. A wide variety of topics are covered in picture books, and reading them to young children helps us talk about important topics through a kid-friendly connection. When we open a book, a child immediately tries to identify with the story's characters.
By building a library of classroom books with characters from a variety of cultural backgrounds, I hope my students "see" themselves within the characters and feel a deeper connection to the story and messages within the stories.
It is essential to create a classroom environment that is welcoming, so celebrating and representing the varying cultures of my students is of utmost importance.
