My Students

My students are five year old and excited to be at school. We are a new Charter school in middle Georgia. Our first two years have been very successful and we have a waiting list for next year.

My students come from some of the most involved parents in our county.

Their parents have applied to have them join our school and they spend at least 20 hours working with us in the school to make sure we have the best available for our students.

My Project

W. Somerset Maugham said that poetry is the crown of literature and I want my students to wear that crown. I want them to learn to love poetry. Each week we learn a different poem and do different activities with the poems. Moving the words around in a pocket charts helps our students to focus on the words and how they fit together. They notice rhyming words, spellings and sight words.

Poetry is the perfect way to teach reading to young students.

They love the rhythm and flow of the words. They enjoy that they can learn to say the poems easily with their peers.

We will use the pocket charts to post poetry, sort the words in the poems and allow the students to manipulate the words. This will give us a dedicated place in the room to focus on poems.
