My students are creative, intelligent, kind, and full of emotions. Many of the students that I service are raised in low-income households, and many are raised by single parents and/or grandparents. They need compassion and affection; they need a calming environment where they are able to decompress with relaxing activities.
In order for students to become academically successful, their emotional needs must be met.
My goal is to provide them with the calming place that they deserve. With puzzles, blocks, putty, and a comfortable place to play, they will learn calming, self-regulating behaviors.
My Project
Creating an inviting space with motivational quotes and a calming atmosphere will help students feel safe and comfortable to express their feelings. The putty and sensory gel mat are tools that students can use to calm down and relax. These resources are wonderful for students with sensory processing issues. Puzzles and building blocks are wonderful tools to use with young students who need a break from over stimulating activities. The conversation cubes and choices activity are great conversation starters for older students who may not be comfortable opening up right away. The table and chairs give students a place to sit and work with each calming tool. Because student information is confidential, having a locking filing cabinet will allow me to keep this information safe.
