The Computer Ate My Paper

My students need 24 flash drives so they can save their assignments on them. We are also trying to go green by saving paper.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Have you ever worked on a paper and all of sudden you hit a button and it was gone? You then opened every file to find out that you never saved it. Well, this has been a constant battle with my students. When asked what happened to their work, I tend to get the same response,"The computer ate my paper."

My students are Freshman Seminar students.

This is a Career and Life prep class. One of the many reasons why this class was adopted and required for all of our Freshmen is because our school district is battling a low graduation rate amongst seniors and a high drop out rate or failing rate amongst 9th graders. Also, many of our students do not know how to successfully get into a college. Therefore, this class is the beginning of their discovery of what they want to do in life and how to get there. The majority of my students are considered to live in poverty. However, they are rich in spirit and determination and desire to be successful and better than where they come from.

My Project

The flash drives will save my students from the constant frustration of loosing their work. Although before each assignment I tell them to save their work, some forget. Also, since all of our students have to share the same computer labs with the entire student body, when my students do save their assignments on the computers sometimes they get erased by other students from different classes. If I can have a class set of flash drives then I can take care of their saved assignments and make sure that no other classes are erasing my students assignments. The flash drives will allow my students to work on the step-by-step projects that take time to complete. For example, my students will be developing a business plan and business cards in the future. This project tends to take a couple of weeks to complete. My students would hate to loose this project because it takes a lot of time and effort to work on. Having flash drives will help to remind them better to save their work as they go.

Good work and proud work does not need to be deleted or lost.

It needs to be saved, published, and seen. The flash drives will allow all the reasons just mentioned to happen. They will also eliminate the excuse that I get all the time, "the computer ate my paper."
