Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of my students come from an environment in which they face adversity daily. They live in a high poverty neighborhood where many families struggle to make ends meet. For many of them their native language is not English. Some of them have traveled from far away places to start a new life in America. Our school is a safe haven for many of them. It is a chance to escape from the stress of life. It is a place to learn, grow, and be loved. My students love to learn and they work hard!
How do you learn best?
Standing up? Sitting in comfy chair? At a table? I have found that students learn and grow best in a place where they feel comfortable and accepted. That is why I began implementing flexible seating in my classroom. Flexible seating allows them some choice in how they learn. It gives them the power to choose where and how they sit and with whom based on their own preferences, strengths, areas of growth, etc. Flexible seating enables them to monitor their own learning and behavior and make choices that will be beneficial to them.
My Project
It is my goal to create a classroom that offers my students a choice of comfortable seating options. Allowing students to choose from a variety of seating options empowers them to make choices that are best for their own learning. It helps them to be mindful of their own preferences and strengths.

The lap desks will help us manage our materials and space when we feel more comfortable on the floor. The chair balls and wobble stools will allow us to manage our wiggles. All items will help us learn how to monitor our own learning and adjust our experience as needed. Thank you!
