Help me give my students multicultural art supplies (such as skin-tone crayons, markers, and paint) that affirm their identities and allow them to see themselves in their classroom and school.
My school serves a diverse population of students in Pre-K to 8th grade. Our students live across Baltimore City and bring a variety of cultures, languages, and life experiences with them into the classroom. Many students attend our school from Pre-K or K until 8th grade, allowing us to become a close and supportive community.
When you walk the halls of our building, you can feel their creativity and joy flow from each room.
Our students are artists, musicians, athletes, innovators, activists, and global citizens. They thrive when they are engaged with hands-on materials and opportunities to connect their learning across disciplines and into the real world.
My Project
These materials will be shared by all teachers in our PreK-8 learning community. Our teachers strive to integrate the arts as a way to engage students and foster creativity and voice. Arts integration allows students to connect with content in a different way, and often makes learning more meaningful.

The arts have a unique power of simultaneously allowing us to express our differences while bringing us together. The arts give everyone a voice. Having access to multicultural art supplies will allow teachers to implement more arts integrated lessons that focus on identity, culture, and affirmation. Students will be able to create portraits that are not limited by the colors in a basic pack of markers, crayons, or paint. Instead of having to choose between white, yellow, orange, brown, and black to create something that "kind-of" looks like them, students will have a variety of colors and shades that accurately depict and celebrate the colors of us.
