My kids (and they really are "my kids") come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and family situations. Our once solidly upper-middle class school has slowly shifted to one with about 50% of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. Three years ago, we qualified as a Title 1 building for the first time. Some of my kids live in beautiful homes with well manicured lawns and look forward to family vacations, others live in hotel rooms, unsure where their next meal may come from on the weekends.
One thing my kids have in common, however, is their unbridled, pure thirst and ENTHUSIASM for learning.
There's never a day when they don't come bouncing into the classroom, ready to take on the day and share with me everything that has happened to them since leaving the previous afternoon. If there's ever a day I arrive at school not feeling 100%, or not in the best of moods, all of that melts away as soon as my first kid walks through the door with their big, missing-toothed grin.
My Project
I'm excited to incorporate the Learning Resources Code Botly Coding Robot Kits into my 2nd-grade classroom. They will be used in small group rotations during math centers to expose students to a career field that they may not have previously considered or been aware of. These requested sets will take advantage of my students' love of hands-on activities and active learning and harness their problem solving and interpersonal skills on a whole new level.
So many times students ask, "Why do we have to learn this?" These coding robots are a concrete, tangible example of math in the real world.
By allowing my students to "play" with the Botley, the coding robots, they will gain experience in the worlds of math, computer science, coding, logic and teamwork. Knowledge in and being comfortable with these disciplines are indispensable skills in our world today and moving forward into the future. These coding robot kits are great tools to provide such an opportunity.
