Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I just moved into my new 6th grade classroom and to my surprise, I found an empty bookshelf. I've worked in the Alum Rock Union School District in East San Jose for 14 years. All of my experience is in elementary school, so I am in need of some new, high interest books for 6th graders!
My students are primarily English Language Learners living in a low income neighborhood in East San Jose.
100% of students receive free and reduced lunch. Our school works relentlessly to give them all the skills and resources necessary to be ready for college and careers, so they can be successful in a competitive environment such as the Silicon Valley. Our students are motivated, ready to learn and have big dreams of becoming engineers, doctors, psychologists, teachers, and police officers.
About 80 out of 90 incoming 6th graders are currently attending orientation this week and they are asking important questions about how to be successful.
The focus of our school is on social justice and we believe that students should leave with a desire and commitment to make the world a better place. In order to reach this goal, we create an awareness of social injustices and educate and empower students to do something positive.
My Project
I am requesting new books for my classroom library because I am committed to supporting my students' love of reading. I recently read, The Book Whisperer and I've learned how to create a classroom where we prioritize reading for enjoyment. As students engage in reading, they increase their vocabulary, make real world connections, become critical thinkers, and analyze strategies that author's use, so they can try them too!
My students will be provided with class time and homework time to engage in reading of their choice. They will also be accountable for completing the reading. I envision a room where we are excited to read, we recommend books to one another, and where we see reading as something we cannot wait to do.
This project will make a difference to my students because we currently have very few books in our room.
When students enter the classroom, it does not look like a place that values books. Many of them are coming from elementary school classrooms with old books that were yellowing, torn and outdated. I believe in sending the message to kids that they deserve new materials, current reading and a variety of books.
