Our students are special in so many ways. No matter where they come from or what they are going through, they still come to school and do the best they can do.
My students are creative, positive, and awesome 7th graders at a Title I school in one of the fastest growing cities in North Carolina.
They need many things to make them as successful and competitive as the other upper class public or private schools in the surrounding area. They need materials that catch their eyes and make them want to learn more.
My Project
This project is very basic compared to a lot of the ones posted on DonorsChoose. While new furniture, computers, and virtual reality headsets are awesome tools to assist student learning, all of that stuff is useless if the students don't have a place to write down their new knowledge or something to write with. As a math teacher, students are required to show their work on paper so we use paper and pencils every single day.
My classroom easily goes through close to 1000 pencils every year.
Middle-schoolers (especially in a Title 1 school) have trouble bringing their required materials to class each day which means having to hand out 5-10 pencils a class. Having a large supply of pencils means every student is working and engaged in class.
Copy paper is another material teachers never have enough of. In math, copy paper is used for nearly everything. From scratch paper for showing work, to worksheets and guided notes and making geometric shapes and on and on and on.
