Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach fourth grade to 45 students who are English Language Learners in an urban environment. Of the student population, 97% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The majority of the students in our school are of Hispanic Heritage. Along with being a solid support for both academic and personal needs, I teach them reading, writing, and Science.

My students are eager and enthusiastic about learning, especially reading.

A student told me this year that she is never lonely if she is reading because her book is her very best friend!

Many of my students say that reading can be boring because they never get to choose material that they find interesting within the classroom. I want to provide all of my students with materials that will spark their interest while meeting their learning needs and ability levels.

Unfortunately, with all the state testing our library is closed more than it is open during the school year. So, the students are limited to our classroom library. These students need to find the joy of reading! My students have a lot of potential but don't feel inspired to challenge themselves with the available material currently in my classroom! Please help us!

My Project

My fourth grade students need and deserve to have books like Poke'mon, Geronimo and Thea Stilton Adventures, Plants VS. Zombies, the Who I Am Books, and many others for a classroom library that will inspire, as well as instill a love for reading. If I had an interesting and inspiring classroom library, my students would be more excited and eager to read! They would have immediate access to a wide variety of independent reading material.Our school library is often closed to students because of standardized testing windows that interrupt weekly visits to the school library. A classroom library would eliminate the weeks that my students must go without books. Some of my students are fortunate enough to have parents or guardians who can buy them books and promote positive reading habits. The vast majority of my students, however, lack this support or availability at home!

Having a classroom library that inspires the love for reading, as well as shows my students how much I value their enjoyment of reading, is the key to student reading gains!

My goal is for my students to see me making efforts to promote their literacy skills. This project of getting a new classroom library will help provide interesting books to the students in my classroom and encourage them to read more. All of the books that I have chosen for this project are from various familiar series, with subject matter in both fiction and non-fiction in order to draw my readers in. I want my students to become more confident readers. For this to happen, they need a classroom library that will help my students find the magic!
