Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently teach third grade in Staten Island NY. The school year only started a month and a half ago but already I can see the needs of my students. One student in particular has truly inspired me to ask for this proposal. She tries her best every day but due to dyslexia and other disabilities she cannot read any books on the third grade level. She also feels embarrassed that she cannot read books such as Harry Potter books. Although she struggles she still tries her hardest everyday.
I would like nothing more than to give her the opportunity to read these incredible books even if she is listening to the books on tape. Many students in my room have no trouble reading on their level however there are a few who struggle. I am finding that my students who struggle have the will and the want to learn and to read. They have many learning disablities that are prohibiting them from advancing in their reading abilities.
I am asking for a group listening center and some books on tape. For students who have trouble understanding words or decoding words these books on tape will give them a lot of help. Students will be able to follow along with the book as it is read to them on the tape. These students will also be able to feel that they can read books on a higher level and discuss these books with other students. I know that by adding a listening center to my classroom will enhance many students learning not only this year but years to come. Thank you in advance for your generosity and help.
