Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I love the Little’s! Teaching kindergarten is such a blessing! It is wonderful to get to watch little guys and girls that have never been anywhere but home, come and learn how to read words for the first time, become independent, and thrive as individuals! I have had children tell me they love to read, or their favorite place in school. That warms my heart. Especially since a lot of my students come from socioeconomically challenged families, or broken homes, oftentimes not knowing where their meals are coming from. I once had a baby boy tell me that his daddy lived in jail, and his mommy had to work a lot, and that one day he wanted to be smart enough to work a lot and make lots of money for all his family. It makes your heart melt to see sweet children like this young boy want to give back when he himself has nothing. One of my favorite things is to teach the children they have a CHOICE! They have a voice, and it matters, they have ideas and they are great. I want my students to have a choice and to have fun!
My Project
With these new math games and classroom books, my students will have the ability to have more CHOICE in how they learn. They will also have hands-on interaction that makes learning special and fun! Choosing your own book to read or listen to, or your very own math game to help you learn can really give a student a sense of ownership in their room and in their learning journey. With these new materials, we will be able to do more read alouds, which teach my students to love books and to have fun with reading! They will be able to take their books to our “campsite” and sit down with some new titles to get lost in. With the math games my students will be able to continue to play as 5-year-olds, but add a twist of math!
