This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I would like to create more of a gallery atmosphere in my high school art class. Inspiring my students to create beautiful, prize-winning art is easy, however displaying it can be a challenge because our classroom has no bulletin boards.
Our school is one of the public school system's international schools. All of our children are recent immigrants. Over 95% of them qualify for the free lunch program. Many of them are discovering for the first time that they are capable of making art that they can be proud of. They enjoy seeing their work displayed in the classroom and bring their friends to see it.
Imagine it - an art room with no bulletin boards. Sure, I can stick everything to the walls with tape, but I have yet to perfect the science of keeping that tape from peeling off when I least expect it, nor am I skillful enough to be 100% certain I'm not going to ruin the paint job when I remove the tape that did decide to stick to the wall.
Bulletin boards should be part of any classroom's infrastructure, especially an art room. With a greater ease in mounting the work, my students could assume more of the responsibilities of selecting art and decorating our room. I would like to stage openings and invite parents to attend. Our school is a wonderful, close-knit community. We have many after school clubs that host parties for everyone, yet parent participation is something that our counselors have asked us to try and improve.
Something this basic will make a big difference to me and my students. Collaborative learning is part of our school's model for education. In my classroom, I picture collaborations on curating and mounting artwork. I imagine the buzz of excitement at openings that showcase our students artistic achievements.
