Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our student population is predominately minority with a large percentage of children of migrant farmworkers. And 100% of our students qualify for the free/ reduced-price lunch program and 87% are classified as English Language Learners. In addition, our school has been designated as a Title I school.

Our students live in a community ravaged by COVID-19; it has consistently ranked # 1 in the county for positive COVID-19 cases since the pandemic shut us down in March 2020.

Our students have limited life experiences, now, made worse by the shutdown. Many families struggle to make ends meet and few can afford the time or materials to support their student(s) learning at home. These constraints widen the learning gaps that my students already struggle with. I am looking for any opportunity to inspire, encourage, engage and instill in my students a love of learning with hands-on activities! In addition, I look to minimize any inequities that this diverse group may be facing. These students need a leg up in fields such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)! We can give that to them!

My Project

According to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology minority populations continue to be underrepresented in STEM disciplines in the U.S.

A child's zip code should not determine their future success.

If we want a nation where our future leaders, neighbors, and workers have the ability to understand and solve some of the complex challenges of today and tomorrow, and to meet the demands of the dynamic and evolving workforce, we must provide quality learning opportunities for our students NOW.

These materials will afford all 102 of our 6th grade students to undertake safe and high-quality chemistry experiments at-home during distance learning. Using these materials, students will learn about acids and bases, ph (potential of hydrogen), physical and chemical changes as well as the procedural components of conducting experiments to include developing hypotheses, collecting data, and providing evidence to support a conclusion.
