My students are hardworking inner-city high school students. Most are first or second-generation immigrants from Central and South America. They are the nicest kids ever and treat me like an honored aunt. They come from impoverished backgrounds, but they are generous and rich when it comes to their hearts.
Although my students don't come from academic backgrounds, they are anxious to learn and better themselves, and they deserve a chance at a great education and better lives.
Our school budget gets cut and cut even as we add more and more students.
My Project
Chemistry is such a difficult subject. Everything in chemistry is coded in so many levels of abstraction it is very hard to understand how it all connects. It can be really boring on top of being difficult. The best way to get my students excited about chemistry is to connect it with things they understand from their everyday lives.
Make Chemistry come alive for my students through something they understand and can get excited about with Bath Bombs.
We were talking in class about different kinds of chemical reactions and how different chemicals react or don't react with water and my students actually suggested making bath bombs and learning about the chemistry behind them. It was the most excited they have gotten about anything in Chemistry all year so I decided to go with it.
