My students are 5th graders in the process of learning to love reading. I teach ELA and Social Studies to two groups of students. They work hard each day and do their best to motivate themselves and others. We do a lot of collaborative group projects and activities in class in order to foster a love for learning and to build teamwork. The students in my classroom come from near and far- some students travel up to 30 minutes each day to get here, so it is my goal to make their experience here as positive as possible.
I strive to meet the needs of all learners and provide high-quality literature in my classroom.
In order to do this, I must think about how each student learns best and find the resources to help meet these needs. From students who are above level needing an extra challenge, to students below level or who struggle to sit still throughout the day, I work to help them all see the greatness within themselves and never give up.
My Project
We are requesting a class set of The Candymakers so that my students will be able to fully analyze this novel throughout our literature study.
It is beneficial for each student to have a copy to use in the classroom so they can read along, build their vocabulary and fluency, use it to analyze story elements, and find evidence in the text when responding to questions.
This novel will be used as an introduction literature study for my students that will lead to small group novel studies, and even independent novel studies later on in the year. Through modeling expectations and working together as a class throughout this unit, it is my hope to guide my students through a deep understanding of not only this novel, but in good reading strategies they can use for any story they read.
