Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher at a low income, minority populated school with a high poverty rate. Many students come from many different backgrounds. Some are in single parent homes, raised by grandparents or in foster care. My students face many challenges outside of school with parents or caregivers struggling themselves.
Although they face so many challenges, they come to school every day eager to learn.
My students come to school energetic and full of curiosity. I strive to make my classroom their home away from home by providing care and support through various engaging activities.
Throughout my many years of teaching, I have experienced that students learn best in a safe, caring and positive environment. My goal is to maximize their potential during the short time I have them in my classroom.
My Project
Student life can be frustrating and difficult for many reasons. Some students struggle with academics, socializing and/or family life. As young students navigate through their school life, I'd like to give my students healthy options for calming down and getting back on track.
My hope is to create an environment that can help my students refocus as a healthy alternative to disrupting learning.
The items I am asking for will help give students engaging tasks as well as a calm comfortable space.
My students will be able to use these materials regularly as they learn to self regulate in order to regroup and focus on their academics. Students will be given direct instruction on ways to calm down when frustrated, upset or having a rough day. Using techniques and strategies along with the items I’m asking for will allow students to learn how to manage their emotions/behaviors.
