Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in the third largest school district of the nation at an International Baccalaureate World School (IB) high school. The school population is 96.4% low income and 89.9% Hispanic. We are offering Diploma Mathematics to all Juniors. This includes students with Individual Education Plans (I.E.Ps) and students who have learning disabilities. Regardless of past experiences in school, all students have bought into taking on a two year college credit course.
Many of my students are first generation college students with families who are working hard to provide them with post-secondary opportunities.
My students are driven and motivated to compete with the best. They need materials to help them take on new challenges so they can maintain these skills throughout their lifetime.
My Project
Math is a language of power and often a language that students have limited access. By providing students with calculators to use throughout the year, students are able to access and understand the language and so they can become more fluent. By having calculators, students are empowered to take on more than they ever thought possible. The key is providing equity of access and time to practice. Calculators provide this time and support.
My students do not have expendable income to buy calculators to use at home.
My school provides a classroom set of calculators. This calculator would be for a student to take home to use throughout the year so they have more opportunity to practice mathematics at home.
