This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My class consists of 18 students ages three through five. I have 6 VPK (Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten) and 12 ESE (Exceptional Student Education) students with a large range of abilities and learning styles. The majority of my students are currently labeled developmentally delayed (DD) with speech, language, occupational, and behavior therapies.
My students are creative, inquisitive, and eager to learn about the world around them.
They all learn at different rates, in different ways, and with different levels of support. In my classroom, the children participate in a variety of hands-on experiences daily. These materials will help to promote positive learning in all developmental areas.
My Project
This year my students will get to experience a brand-new curriculum in pre-k! A topic of study we will discuss is BUILDING! Who builds buildings? What are buildings made of? What do the buildings in our neighborhood look like? What tools do we use to build? are just a few questions we will be exploring.
Strictly Briks, Brik placemats, jumbo blocks, community signs, and animals will allow my students the chance to explore the world of building.
With the materials listed above, my students will build a variety of different building for peoples and animals thus building a community feel in our very own classroom.
Our classroom block area consist of standard wooden blocks, cars, and farm animals. These materials will add a variety of discussion starters and examination. E.g. What size blocks are better for building a house or tower? What type of block will be the strongest? Who will live in this building?
All of these materials have been chosen with my students needs in mind. The majority of students whom attend the elementary school I teach at, often do not have the opportunities to observe and interact with animals and buildings found outside of our town. It is my job as their teacher to always provide them with hands on materials and experiences that will allow them to build vocabulary and knowledge of concepts.
