My students need magnetic blocks along with LEGO block sets to help them with their creative building skills and explore different roles within their community.
Most of my students are English as a second language learners with a high percentage qualifying for free lunch. For many of them this is their first time being submerged in an english speaking environment. My students are faced with many difficulties in and out of the classroom.
Despite the challenges my students face, they come into the classroom everyday ready to learn, play, communicate and make new friends.
We have a fun group of students ready to take on the challenge of learning a different language than spoken at home, and are ready to jump into anything I put in front of them. We have fun learning and do so through many avenues.
My Project
Our classroom currently has only a few sets of block, which makes it hard for more than a pair of students to use at once. With what we have, the students enjoy building castles, towers as high as they can, and buildings for the small collection of figurines that we have. The LEGO figurines I am requesting in this project are those of important people portrayed in our lives that students come across: community helpers--police officers, teachers, doctors, etc. The diversity within the set is relatable to students and they highlight different professions. I look forward to observing the students activate prior knowledge when working with the my town sets. The students will be able to explore roles and responsibilities with the community people figurines.
Building futures for our students through educational materials like a variety of LEGO blocks and figurines, will allow them to use critical thinking, and social skills.
Being able to have more materials to expand their knowledge along with sparking their imagination builds excitement through learning. That excitement and relatable content is just a few of the sub-building blocks in their educational experiences that will carry with them for years to come. The thought of their excitement when receiving these new additions to our classroom already has me filled with much joy.
